Media Mogulette In The Making
by Arlice Nichole
From books to film and everything in between, Brooklyn-born Abiola Abrams is your modern day Harlem renaissance chic! Her Manolo Blahniks have taken her on a journey of becoming a successful author, TV personality and filmmaker. Her debut novel Dare, a story about a woman in love with hip-hop, but it no longer loves her, has garnered top reviews from Upscale magazine, Hot 97, AOL’s Black Voices and many others. Her name has appeared alongside literary greats such Maya Angelou, Alice Walker and Edwidge Danticat to name a few, and you’ve likely seen her across television networks hosting shows like HBO’s Chat Zone, The Source: All Access for NBC, and chatting with talented indie filmmakers for The Best Shorts on BET. We also got to see a more intimate side of Abiola on VH1’s reality show, Tough Love, produced by Drew Barrymore, and she’s even sat in the director’s chair as producer herself. But with so many accomplishments to date, what’s most inspiring about Abiola is her dedication and zeal for inspiring other women while on her own path to success.
Founder of The Goddess Factory, a fun and inspirational movement to motivate and empower women of all backgrounds, as defined by her website, Abiola ensures that she’s not only here for us, but she is us with a pen and a microphone. Calling herself “the Curator of The Goddess Lifestyle,” one of the many ways she helps to bring out the goddess in other women is through the popular social network Twitter. Her tweets: “Today’s Goddess XO,” is delivered with punch and kick meant to help rev up your day and get you pumped about the possibilities and opportunities that life has to offer.
When talking to Abiola on the phone, in addition to being warm and inviting, you hear that same confident kick that you see on TV or read in her writings. She has a graceful energy. On top of her regular gigs, she invites us into the world of Abiola, unscripted and unedited by providing footage of her life’s many escapades. Nothing seems too much for Abiola. She lives for being in front of and behind the camera. “ I think that most people who are personalities in the media these days get to work across the different genres and so that’s exactly what I want to be doing, but I want to be more in control, doing more exciting stuff!” When you’re doing everything you love, which is rare and wonderful, it never seems like too much.
What’s the secret to her success you might ask? Well, it’s like the saying goes: success is a journey. “There are very many starts just as there are many different levels of success. I was in plays and I modeled as a kid and during my teen years, I went to school and studied theatre and film, but one of the most pivotal things was spending two years as a host on BET. That helped to really bring things together for me.” She’s not quick to agree that she’s self-made. A trip to her parents home, Guyana opened her eyes to the fact that she didn’t make it this far alone. “I’m a first generation American, so coming from an immigrant background helps me appreciate things in a different way. My parents were farmers and I went back to their country, Guyana, and had forgotten the outhouse. When I saw it I realized I’d come from a history of people who made a lot of sacrifices for me to be able to have choices.”
“I would say more than anything do what you love and the money will follow. If you set-up an inexpensive lifestyle then you can intern or work for free to build your craft of whatever career you’ve chosen and get the education to back it up.” Fabulous new ventures are on the way for Abiola, but she doesn’t want to spoil it for us. Her fans will find out soon enough and Mahogany Butterfly will check-in to report the latest. In the meantime, she’ll continue her hustle; stay radiantly beautiful with her morning green tea and water all day, everyday while taking us with her on the hike to success.
Twitter: Today’s Goddess XO: Yay! You look great. It’s gonna be a fantastic day; a chance to begin again. Are you up to the challenge?
