Cooking Up Conversation with Sunny Anderson

Queen of the kitchen, Sunny Anderson, reigns supreme hosting not one but two shows on the Food Network...

by Arlice Nichole

Vibe Magazine crowned her “ruler of the airwaves” when she worked for New York’s Hot 97 radio station -- interviewing heavy weights like Bill Clinton, Beyonce and Nas to name a few.  Now the queen in the kitchen, foodie Sunny Anderson reigns supreme hosting not one but two shows on the Food Network!  On Cooking For Real,  Sunny butters-up our favorite classic meals, transforming them into mouth-watering dishes like New Orleans Shrimp Pot Pie, Spicy Macaroni and Cheese and Pineapple Upside-down Nutty Spice Cake and other simple recipes with a twist -- all easy to prepare and easy on the budget.  If that's not enough,  on How’d That Get On My Plate, Sunny takes us on an exciting journey showing us how foods we enjoy daily make their way from  from the farm, to the factory, to the farmer’s market and onto your plate.

Sunny’s love affair with all things food motivated her to move on from the world of Hip-Hop, and MaBu was lucky enough to catch up with her for a little conversation.

MaBu: From the airwaves to the kitchen, two very different fields, why the drastic change?

Sunny: I’m a firm believer in fulfilling more than just one dream in a lifetime.  If you can fulfill more than one dream, have fun in it; relax in it, then dare to dream.

MaBu: When it comes to food, are you one of those people that will try anything once?

Sunny: I’m not going to eat anything that’s an endangered species or anything like monkey brains (laughs).  But, I don’t think I have a problem eating anything put in front of me.  I love to eat! I love any foods that are really bad for you! (Laughs)

MaBu: You worked for Hot 97, one of radio’s most popular stations.  Do you miss radio at all?

Sunny:I do miss radio.  What I miss most about radio is being on the air, talking to people who wanted to talk about something they'd just seen or heard on the news.  I liked the conversation and interaction with people.  While I was working on getting to Food Network, I lacked that.  So, I started blogging a little bit, sending e-mails to the shows viewers and talking to a few people that hang out at my blog.  That kind of fits the bill for what I’m missing in radio.  I can still listen to music when I want to, and talk people’s ear off, but I just really miss the people.

Ever come across a dish you just couldn’t master?
Sunny: I don’t know if I would say couldn’t.  I want to say wouldn’t.  I believe that any one can pretty much do anything.  You have to relax, have patience.

MaBu: What’s your favorite type of food?

Sunny: I have favorites in all types of fare.  I love a little of everything.  It’s hard to choose one thing. I like comfort foods, really rich, thick, creamy foods. I love any food that’s really bad for you! (Laughs)

MaBu: Other than cooking up delicious dishes and exploring the journey of a single food, what do you do to bring spice to your life?

Sunny: I love reading, traveling, going on walks, especially in New York.  I also love exploring new restaurants and trying new foods.  I really love life.

MaBu: Being such a talented cook, do you eat out much?

Sunny: Oh, I love to eat out-a lot!  I have to try new foods just to see what’s out there.

MaBu: When you’re at restaurants, are you able to fully enjoy your meal or do you find yourself critiquing?

Sunny: I usually enjoy it. I may complain, but my plate will be clean!

MaBu: After preparing meals on TV, and that being your profession, do you get the same enjoyment when you come home and have to cook for yourself?

Sunny: All the time!  The only time I don’t cook for myself is when I’m actually taping and I’ve cooked all day.  I usually try bring a little of the day’s work home.  But, sometimes I have to wrangle and wrestle for some food to take home because they have to take pictures for the Internet and the actual show.  There are times I don’t get to take any food home.

MaBu: Cooking for one show, traveling for another, you look great!  What does beauty mean to you?

Sunny: Beauty is something I work on every day.  I work on beauty in the inside.  There’s nothing like waking up feeling good and going to work feeling good.

MaBu: So what’s next for Sunny?

Sunny: I love writing. When I was growing up I always wanted to be published. I didn’t think it was going to be a cook book I kind of have to get some recipes out there.  I think I’m going to wait a little bit though.

* Catch Sunny on the Food Network on Cooking For Real, Sunday’s at 10:30 am, and How’d That Get On My Plate, Mondays at 9:30 pm.
