Spring Trends: Designer Style for Real Women
by Elana Pruitt
Don’t stress about what to wear this spring. Yes, you -- a real woman -- can take some of the hottest runway trends and make them your own. Whether you are a slim or curvy girl, the time to spruce up your wardrobe (at an affordable price, instead of a "runway" fortune) is now.
But remember, ladies: Be realistic about your shape and size, because every trend is not for everyone.
Straight From the Runway
Bright hues, silk dresses and blouses, billowy, harem-esque bottoms and graphic prints are all the rage.
How to Wear It
Neon colors: If you are a basic fashionista, you'll probably want to ease your way into bright colors by incorporating them as accents to your outfit. This could be done with accessories, shoes, a scarf and a belt or a purse.
Isaac Mizrahi was in your face with his stamp of neon approval.
Silk dresses and blouses: A silk dress, skirt, pant or blouse is worth trying on versus taking it for how it looks on the hanger. There is not much give. Silk doesn't breathe as well as cotton, so it is best to not wear a tight fitting silk item.
Silk fringe romanticized the spring at the Carolina Herrera runway show.
Loose, billowy pants: The more narrow you are, the more narrow the bottom of the pants can be. Women with hips and a shapely bottom may want to seek billowy pants that offer more room at the bottom. This helps to even out and flatter the overall body shape.
MC Hammer has got nothing on Tommy Hilfiger's chic, billowy pants.
Bold, graphic prints: If you're all about making a statement, then this trend is for you. Tone down a busy dress or blouse by throwing on a solid color scarf or cardigan. And this season, Michael Kors showed that bold is beautiful.
Shoes Galore
Metallic wedge sandals, wood platforms and fringe sandals are in sync with spring’s embellished and over-the-top fashion trends.
How to Wear It
Going casual does not mean you can’t sparkle with style: Try pairing flats in a gladiator or ballerina style, with gauchos, a short jumper or bootcut jean.
Feel the '70s vibe with platform footwear: An A-line skirt, wide-leg jeans or a flirty dress will help channel that blast from the past.
Be ruggedly cool: Native American-inspired sandals were everywhere on the runways. Mini dresses, cut-off denim shorts and fitted or rolled-up jeans welcome this sassy trend.
Adding the Finishing Touches
Two of the most coveted accessories this spring are crafty, over-sized necklaces and big bangles. Remember how good it used to feel playing dress up as a girl -- and wearing your mama's jewelry? This season offers the chance to relive those days, as the costume jewelry look is totally in and attainable.
How to Wear It
Big Bangles: Don’t feel obligated to wear multiple bracelets if that is not your style. A single bangle can make a grand statement all its own. Wear it with a fitted, long sleeved blouse, a billowy sheer tunic or with a tank.
Oversized Necklaces: Incorporate some of your personality and have fun. Charms, large beads, leather strands, chain links -- it's all good. Pair the necklace with a blazer for work and then turn your night out with a strapless dress and sexy heels. Warning: A big, crafty choker may crowd your beautiful facial features.
At the Marc Jacobs runway show, big necklaces and bracelets channeled both the boho chic and art deco glam style.
